If you are interested in learning more about Windows, a particular program, or even an exchange of ideas or information regarding the computer industry, WINNERS - WINdows usERS is for you! WINNERS is a great place to see the latest software and also learn how to use it. We provide a easy (and fun) atmosphere for you to see new and interesting programs or hardware. Each month we have demonstrations of how to work with different programs, or hardware. We also have a discussion of computer and software problems (Random Access), and how to solve them. Computer tips are given out each month. You don't have to join right away, come in and see if you like us. We are in Orange County California, right near the San Diego (405) Freeway.
Membership is $20 annually for individuals with $5 for each additional family member.
"User groups represent the spirit of the frontier, a community getting together to do things that no individual ought to have to do alone. The pioneers of the American west got together for barn raisings, cattle roundups, and the occasional party. The pioneers of new technology get together for installfests, new user training and support, and just plain fun. Being part of a user group is the best way to get more out of your computer, and lets you make friends while you're at it." — Tim O'Reilly, President, O'Reilly & Associates
Francis Chao will talk about:
"Ransomware" is malware that takes over your computer or part of your computer and offers to give you back access to it when you pay a ransom fee. In a "Windows.." computer, some of the more benign variants of "ransomware" can be removed by booting up the computer in "Safe Mode".
The more sophisticated instances of "ransomware" can only be removed by booting up with a free bootable "rescue media" CD-R disc, DVD-R disc, or USB flash drive. For details about removing "ransomware" see http://aztcs.org/meeting_notes/winhardsig/antivirus/ransomware.pdf
When malware takes over a computer, the complexities of "Secure Boot" inside the "UEFI" BIOS require that we attempt to expunge the malware with more than one rescue CD, since different rescue CDs have different capabilities for booting up the "locked down" computer that have been sold since August 2012. He will simulate two infections that he fixed last year. He will bring in some rescue CD's to hand out.
