Actiontec www.actiontec.com
With the Actiontec zControl™ users
can take “total home control” from a jumble of mismatched and often
incompatible devices and systems to a consistent, unified experience unmatched
in set up and usability. Housed in a small, unobstructive plastic case it can
auto-discover compatible devices and pre-configure them, while also using
configuration wizards to set up other new devices, appliances and services. All
of your lights, motion detectors and IP cameras can be accessed as well as
thermostats, electronic shades and blinds, and even lawn and garden components
like automatic sprinklers.
One setting might turn on the hallway light, heat and lawn sprinklers after
work. Others might raise the shades in the morning, light the house to set the
scene for a romantic dinner, switch lights on and off during the day while
you’re on vacation, or let you turn on specific house lights from your phone
when you’re sitting in the driveway late at night.
Whether you’re watching television in the living room, surfing the Internet in
the den, or logging on to a computer across the country. Context-based screens
allow different users to customize the interface to highlight the tasks they
consider most important, eliminating on-screen confusion.
The zControl™ also contains a comprehensive help system that keeps you informed
and guides you through any difficulties you may encounter. If something goes
really wrong, you can contact a remote technician who can “virtually enter”
your system and fix any problems. Users can add other Zwave-enabled devices by
simply pressing the Discovery button on the front of the zControl™, and then
clicking the appropriate button on the other Zwave device. The second device
will then automatically be added to your network. zControl is the only product
in its class with this automated discovery capability, eliminating the need to
perform a two-step discovery process using a remote control or enter router IP
addresses, SSIDs or other identifiers. It is also the only home automation
controller that can use both PCs and Macs for scene setup and other functions.
The standalone Actiontec zControl Starter Kit is available
at an MSRP of $399 including the zControl unit, one indoor camera with motion
detector, one lighting control module, and a remote control. zControl-enabled
wireless gateways and routers will be released in March. I met with Actiontec and was impress with how easy
it was to use and setup.

Big Stage www.bigstage.com
They have developed technology which allows users to easily create and
integrate a life-like 3-D avatar of themselves into everything from famous
movie scenes, TV shows and video games, to music videos, short video clips, virtual
worlds, still images, user-generated content, instant messages, e-mails, social
networks and more – instantly.
With Big Stage’s 3-D capture
technology, users take three simple pictures of themselves with a digital
camera and upload them to the Web, where they are quickly converted into a
life-like 3-D avatar. They then
map the contours of a user’s face to generate an incredibly accurate replica of
the user, fully equipped for animation. In under a minute, your avatar is born
and fully alive through realistic movement and gestures. Users can then style
it with a host of accessories, from hair to eyeglasses, tattoos, hats and more.
After users create and style their avatars, they can drop them
into the library of Big Stage-enabled (BSE) user and professionally created content.
The life-like avatar creation system stems from advanced stereo reconstruction
technology funded by multiple government grants, including the CIA, as part of a
nine-year cumulative research project at the University of Southern California. Big
Stage will launch to consumers in the second quarter of 2008.

Announced a 14.3-inch E-paper display, which is equivalent in size to an A4
sheet of paper, represents a significant improvement over its predecessors with
a never before seen resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, and the ability to
display 16.7 million colors, making it perfect for use in high end multimedia
applications. These displays are extremely energy efficient, only using power
when the image changes. Additionally, the displays are extremely thin, at less
than 300 micrometers. The use of metal foil and plastic substrates, rather than
glass substrate makes the flexible color E-paper display bendable and durable,
while maintaining display qualities. Like its predecessors, this 14.3-inch
display uses a substrate that arranges thin-film transistors (TFT) on metal
foil rather than glass, allowing it to recover its original shape after being
bent. Furthermore, it can also be viewed from a full 180 degrees, so that
images always appear crisp, even when the display is bent.

MediaMVP
Play MPEG movies on your TV set. Create MPEG videos on your
PC with Hauppauge's WinTV (optional), then play those videos on your TV set. The
remote control gives you complete control over your PC multimedia. Pause, fast
forward, rewind, skip or fast skip through videos. Play and pause music and
digital picture shows. You can adjust the audio volume from MediaMVPs remote
control, so you won’t need to use your TV's remote control.
Technically speaking MediaMVP is a Linux based digital media receiver. Inside
is a high performance IBM PowerPC processor and a hardware MPEG audio/video
decoder for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 videos and MP3 music.
