Task Management - ideas of how to use it, and differences between Windows 7/8/10

Some examples: CPU, memory, and/or disk percentages when software or hardware inside a computer starts malfunctioning. The "Startup" tab can be used to non-destructively turn off "startup processes" to speed up a computer. The "Services" tab can be used to reset a network adapter that is hung up. Resetting or starting up the "Blue Support Service" can sometimes get "Devices and Printers" to start up when it fails to do so.

Using the "Processes" tab, you can compare the network and RAM overhead when "Live Tiles" is turned off for all tiles in "Windows 8", "Windows 8.1", and "Windows 10".

What To Do When Your Computer Won't Come Up

September 26

Covering Windows 10

October 31
Computer Management

Storage has really evolved with Windows 8.1's "File History" and "Storage Spaces" providing massive improvements in reliability. "Storage Spaces" provides the end-user with a reliable software-based way to mirror two hard drives for total redundancy to reduce the effects of mechanical failure of hard drives.

"Settings" was new in "Windows 8" and back then it could do a subset of what the Control Panel could do. "Settings" in "Windows 10" will gradually take over all of the functions of the "Control Panel" which will disappear from "Windows.." in the next two years. In "Windows 10", "Settings" can even reboot the computer into the UEFI configuration screens so the end-user does not have to learn the computer motherboard manufacturer's proprietary key sequence for getting into the UEFI screens.
Services using the services.msc console window is still the safest way to tweak many parts of the registry to increase the speed and reliability of a computer. The "Event Viewer" in "Administrative Tools" is an efficient way to narrow down problems such as hard drive errors and software bugs. "Security Policy" in "Administrative Tools" lets the end-user make some quick but reversible changes to network location: For example, if you take your laptop to a public place, you can use "Security Policy" to temporarily change the "Network Location" of the computer to "Public" instead of "Private" or "Home" to make your computer much more hack proof.

The main features in "Windows 10", as described in

Dave Murphy talked about his just published book entitled "Imperial College Expedition to Kashmir in 1960."

It is a pictorial documentation of the experiences of a group of five college students driving overland from London to Kashmir and back in 1960 through Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The purpose of the expedition was to demonstrate that the overland route from London to Kashmir was possible in an ordinary production car, and to report on the road conditions.

The book is at If you click Bookstore, enter "Murphy expedition" and "all" in the two search windows, then both the e-Book and Book will appear.  The Book version has all the pages and photographs viewable online for free. Dave and his friend's 3-month journey in 1960 across Europe and the Middle East shows how life was 55 years ago.

Francis Chao will talked about:

"Ransomware" is malware that takes over your computer or part of your computer and offers to give you back access to it when you pay a ransom fee. In a "Windows.." computer, some of the more benign variants of "ransomware" can be removed by booting up the computer in "Safe Mode".

The more sophisticated instances of "ransomware" can only be removed by booting up with a free bootable "rescue media" CD-R disc, DVD-R disc, or USB flash drive. For details about removing "ransomware" see

When malware takes over a computer, the complexities of "Secure Boot" inside the "UEFI" BIOS require that we attempt to expunge the malware with more than one rescue CD, since different rescue CDs have different capabilities for booting up the "locked down" computer that have been sold since August 2012.  He will simulate two infections that he fixed last year. He also brought rescue CD's to hand out.

Francis Chao talked about: Powerline Networking

Do you have problems connecting to the Internet with your Wi-Fi when you are not close to it? Powerline networking allows you to link up computers to one another, or to a router through the powerline (electrical outlets) in your home or business. The specifications for HomePlug 2.0 is for it to run at 200Mbps (most test have it at 80-90Mpbs. The range is stated as 990 feet.

It is actually more secure than a wireless network too. As data is sent across the copper wiring in your home, it can't be hacked or misused from the outside. When I tested it I ran extension cords from my garage over 250 feet, and could still connect to the Internet. I also verified it by plugging into my neighbor’s outlet and could not see the network. So if you have one of those new HDTVs with network capabilities, but can not see or it is weak, here is the answer. All of the networking-related topics that he hopes to cover at the meeting are now located at

You can use the "Revo Uninstaller Freeware", "The PC Decrapifier", and "BleachBit" programs to remove the "trialware" (= "nagware") and other unneeded software that resides in your "Windows.." computer. You can then install a free antivirus program and a free office software suite to replace the "trialware".

For secure Web access at your home or business, you can use a two-router demilitarized zone AND a Virtual Machine that has a USB Ethernet adapter.

For secure Web access at a public location, you can use a virtual machine that has a real USB WiFi adapter.

After installing this real USB WiFi adapter for the virtual machine, you should delete the default virtual wired network adapter prevent malware from travelling from the virtual machine to your real, host computer.

Cloud Technology

Are you using the Cloud? Many people answer, no. We seem to need buzz words to define anything related to computers and this is one that seems to mystify people. You'll be surprised when you find out how much we are all using the Cloud and how much more is out there that we can take advantage of.

We no longer have just one computer, we have a smart phone, a tablet and probably a second computer. How can we keep our data files in sync on all of them? We want to be able to share files with family, friends and associates, but emailing them is not very efficient. Is there a better way?

How can we use cloud storage services like Dropbox, SkyDrive, Google Drive and others to make things easier? They have all recently been updated since you may have looked at them. Where does Apple iCloud fit into the mix?

D-Link came and showed us their latest in networking such as their:

DIR-825DIR-825 Extreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router. It's like two routers in one. This Xtreme N® router operates on dual band Wi-Fi signals, making it easy to stream HD content while browsing the Internet without bogging down your network.

The D-Link® Xtreme N™ Dual Band Gigabit Router (DIR-825) uses dual band technology to support 2.4GHz & 5GHz wireless signals at the same time. This allows you to check e-mail and browse the Internet using the 2.4GHz band while simultaneously streaming High-Definition (HD) movies and other media on the 5GHz band. The DIR-825 is designed for users looking to get a true HD wireless connection that can handle multiple HD video streams throughout the house, while being backward compatible with existing 802.11g and 802.11a products.

With some routers, all wired and wireless traffic, including Voice over IP (VoIP), Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like Streaming Video could pause or delay. With the D-Link Intelligent QoS Prioritization Technology, wired and wireless traffic are analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. These streams are then categorized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP, Video Streaming, and Online Gaming can be given top priority. This enables multiple applications to stream smoothly to your TV or PC.

Bruce Carl Aronson - Time Management

List the things you need to do. Quantity is what is need at the start, so put everything down. Afterward go through and label them. A items being the most important, they have to be done today. The C items are ones that if they don’t get done it won’t really matter. While the B items are ones that will become A’s if you don’t do them. After that go through and number them as to the most important. Then do them.

Be sure to book yourself down time. You need to enjoy life along the way.

He gave us a great presentation. Left us with the lasting words from the father of time management Alan Lakein "What is the best use of my time, right now?"

Leave Windows Behind - but bring your apps with you

Powerful trends today are making non-Windows operating systems attractive to many people and organizations, but everybody has a few key Windows applications they can't do without. Wine can be a useful tool for running legacy applications without having to purchase Windows for every computer. This talk showed you how you can leave Windows behind -- and still use key windows applications.
